Wolf Run Golf Club Course Review
September 27, 2020
Wolf Run Golf Club – Reno, NV
Date played – September 1, 2020
Marc and I are currently on our “Shake Down” trip with our new Luxe 44 ft Toy Hauler RV.
We departed Florida in mid August and met up with my sister and her husband in Reno. They were traveling in their RV…… (a.k.a: BABS – Big Ass Bus Sistah)!
While staying in Reno, Marc and I decided to play a round of golf at Wolf Run Golf Club.
The course is situated amid the Sierra Foothills, tumbling across a picturesque desert landscape sprinkled with native flora.
The layout has many risk-reward opportunities and the par-3 holes are especially fun. The hilly terrain is as scenic as it is challenging, providing some tricky uneven lies and there is a meandering creek that slithers along the fairways. Though it’s wide open, the golf course requires a bit of accuracy and some good course management. The elevated tees offer some spectacular views as well as some intimidating approaches to the fast, undulating greens. In addition to the golf course, Wolf Run also has a practice facility with a driving range and putting and chipping greens. You can also get your clubs repaired on site.
This course is truly what I would picture if someone told me I was playing a high desert course.
There are very few trees (which is ok if you play like me and can’t stay in the fairways), lots of rocks, and an interesting terrain. Very little water hazards – a couple of creeks to play across and one pond that can be quite intimidating for a par 3. The layout is creative with nice water features. The track is extremely well maintained with diverse tee box locations and challenging greens.
The course is well laid out and fun to play.
We had an early morning tee time – as Reno seems to get a little windy in the late summer/early fall afternoons and there is nothing on this course to slow the wind down. Remember there aren’t any trees for shade in the hot afternoons. We were paired up with two local golfers – Jeff and Cal – who were very helpful when it came to letting us know where to aim on the various holes.
Pace of play was great, our foursome finished in just over 4 hours, kudos to the Marshall – Jim – for keeping things moving. Carts are modern and well outfitted, even have USB charging ports. Friendly staff, nice bar at the club house, good price for what you get.
We played on September 1st and the condition of the course was superb.
Greens were rolling true and the fairways were in good condition!
It wasn’t just a round of golf – there were several animals to watch. Marmots of all ages were out eating grass and sunning. (It would have been nice if they were trained to move my ball to better positions.)
There were eagles and hawks soaring and searching for food. We were told there may be coyotes wondering across fairways uncaring, and to watch out for the occasional snake. Just FYI – we did not see any coyotes or snakes!
There’s a nice pro shop to pick up anything you need or forgot. Wolf Run Golf Club is not too far from Reno’s main strip and even closer to where we were staying – the Grand Sierra RV park.
The staff is friendly and helpful. The practice area is good and the range isn’t over priced. As we finished our round we noticed a sign stating Wolf Run Golf Course prides itself on being the home course to the University of Nevada Men’s and Women’s Golf Teams.
Overall Wolf Run Golf course was enjoyable and if I am ever in Reno again I would definitely play the course again!
