Motol Golf Club Prague Review
October 8, 2019
Date of Play – Sep 3, 2019
After five years, Kathy and I have now left Prague. And it is only fitting that the last course I review and write about is a course located within the Prague city limits. I played this course with a golfing friend that I met in Prague and have known him almost the entire five years that I lived in the Czech Republic.
Almost all of the golf courses in the Czech Republic have two names. I call this course Motol and the other name it goes by is Golf Club Prague. Everyone knows what course it is no matter what name is used. Motol is about 8 minutes from my house. I should have played this course to death. But, I only played it once a year. Every time I played it, I swore that I would play it more. But I didn’t. This brings us to September 3rd. It was my birthday and a friend wanted to get in a quick round of golf with me before I left Prague. (Thanks again Bas. I had a great day). We decided on Motol. The morning was crisp and the sun was shining with just a few clouds in the sky. The breeze was light and cool. I could not have picked a better day to play golf. This course transforms city life into rolling hills, trees and no sign of the city in just a 10 minute drive from the center of Prague. It is amazing what they did with the green area that they had to work with.
Motol uses every inch of the small property to make a cool little golf course. You can use every club in the bag. You have to play sharp and think just a bit about each shot. The only part of the city you can see is a big hospital when you are standing on a couple of the tee boxes that are on the top of the hill. The course is old. So the trees are full grown. The layout is completely mature and the course looks and feels the same from year to year. That makes it comfortable as soon as you walk on. You know you are going to get an 18 hole course feel out of a 9 hole course.
The course is always in good condition. Sometimes the greens can be rolled or cut a bit shorter, but the grass is always nice. There are no brown spots or dry areas. The fairways are always cut nice, albeit a bit natural. There is not a lot of rough because they use all the space they have for the course layout. They use trees to separate the holes, making most holes lined with trees on both sides. The good thing is that they are not thick rows of trees so if you get into them you can hit out if you keep it low. The bunkers are well placed and have good sand. None of the holes have a gimmick set up to make up for space issues.
The reception is alway nice and they are willing to get you on the course even if you are a walk-on. By the way, walk ons are not that welcome in the Czech Republic. They want you to have a tee time. Most of the receptionists are not golfers and don’t understand the need to squeeze you in with someone else. That makes Motol an exception.
One thing this course has over the other courses within 30 minutes of Prague is that you can take public transportation to get there.
They have rental clubs and the course is easy to walk. The price is low enough that you could justify slipping away from your planned vacation events and sneak in a quick 9 holes before anyone even knows you are gone.
Motol, or Golf Club Prague, is the best 9 hole course I have ever played. And, I did not play it enough. The course is always in good shape. There are things that could be better but I would just be picking at the course. Taking into consideration that Motol is a 9 hole course and not an 18 hole course, I would give this course a birdie. If you are visiting Prague and have a little extra time on your hands, you need to play this course. You can get there on public transportation. They have everything you need. Just show up ready to play.
